About Me

As a self-taught artist based in Houston, Texas, Valerie Burkes has been creating since the age of eight and embarked on her professional journey in 2008. Her inaugural show, curated by the Museum of Fine Arts Houston for the 5A Citywide Art Exhibition, set the stage for a career dedicated to honoring the evolution of everyday, underrepresented individuals within the African American community.

Valerie's work, described as figurative abstract art, weaves together the rich tapestry of personal stories and cultural narratives. Through her use of paintings and mixed media, she captures the essence of her subjects, celebrating their resilience, beauty, and contribution to society. Her art is a vivid commentary on the human experience, characterized by bold colors, dynamic compositions, and intricate textures that draw the viewer into a deeper understanding of the subjects she portrays.

Throughout her career, Valerie's work has been showcased at various esteemed venues including Houston's City Hall, Rice University, Houston Community College, University of St. Thomas,  JP Morgan Chase Building, The Community Artists Collective, Texas Southern University, African American Museum Dallas, Hardy Nance Studios Houston, and Lawndale Art Center. Each exhibition offers a new perspective on her evolving artistic vision and commitment to reflecting the nuances of African American life.

Valerie's artistic journey is a testament to her dedication and passion as she continues to push the boundaries of her craft, creating works that are not only visually compelling but also rich in meaning and cultural significance.
