Valerie Burkes was born in Albuquerque New Mexico. Although this self-taught artist has been painting since the age of 8, she began her professional career as a Painter in 2008. Her first show was the Museum of Fine Arts Houston 5A Citywide Art Exhibition.
Valerie describes her work as figurative abstract art. The work goes through a distortion process that allows her to re-contextualize the subject matter with amplified tones and values. She considers her work a tribute to all things inspiring and often uses women, children, religion, and music as the subject matter.
Throughout the years Valerie’s work has been on display at several Houston venues such as Houston’s City Hall, Rice University, Houston Community College, University of St. Thomas, Museum of Cultural Arts Houston, JP Morgan Chase Building, The Community Artists Collective, Texas Southern University, Houston Central Library, and The Shrine of the Black Madonna. Valerie currently resides in Houston Texas.
